Premiere: Keel Her Shares New Track "Empathy"
O Genesis will be releasing the new Keel Her album With Kindness on June 14. Earlier this spring, Keel Her (Rose Keeler-Schäffeler) shared “No Control” from the upcoming album, and today it is our distinct pleasure here at Weirdo Music Forever to premiere standout track “Empathy”, also from With Kindness.
Keel Her is known to many through her eponymous 2014 debut album and past collaborations with home recording pioneer R. Stevie Moore, including the Moore-produced seven-inch “With Me Tonight/Boner Hit” (O Genesis).
Reflecting on the inspiration behind “Empathy”, Keel Her shared the following background with us:
“I wrote this at a time of feeling very isolated and alone. It's about trying to look at things with an open mind, to put yourself in others’ shoes, and the difficulties that can arise.
There is reference to my frustration towards historic discrimination I have received at work and in music, being a woman and feeling left out. It is one of those songs where it all came out naturally, kind of like a diary entry, but then you look back at it and really notice how you've changed and how you feel different.
I envisaged a sort of 'call and response' section, so sent it to a friend of mine, Sean Armstrong (Spinning Coin), who sang on the third verse and joined me in the fourth. It's an homage to empathy -- we all need it.”
