A Real Shoe Gaze Origin Story: The Background to GLOK's Hypnotic Gem "Process"

The conclusion of the Ride/Charlatans Between Nowhere Tour North American tour was nothing short of historic. Indeed, Saturday February 18 was significant not only because of the remarkable aforementioned double bill, but also because of the several creative intersections and reunions the show facilitated. One of our favorite meetings was that of Andy Bell and Shamon Cassette, immediately following the final performance of the tour at the Wiltern. Trainspotters may have noticed our love of the 2021 track “Process” from recommended 2021 GLOK album Pattern Recognition.

While we’ve loved the track from the start, we never dove too deeply into the lyrics (instead appreciating the overall hypnotic vibe of Andy’s music and Shamon’s vocal delivery) so we were surprised when Andy recently mentioned that the lyrics were about shoes. Indeed, Shamon confirmed the following for us:

“[Andy] called me on one of the first days I ever hung out w[ith] Tara and I was teaching her how to dissect shoes in a boiling pot and upcycle the heels and recreate the upper portion. Andy thought it would be a great idea if I explained exactly what I was doing at the moment on the track.”
