CAL Blasts off with Psychedelic Space-Pop Single and Video "A Matter of Time"

“If Chris Rainbow scored the soundtrack to Dark Star” - Ross Harris

Creative Audio Laboratory has shared new single “A Matter of Time”, out now on all platforms via Weirdo Music Forever Records. “A Matter of Time” is CAL’s fourth single, following the success of debut track “All Along” , follow-up “You Don’t Need a Reason” and summer epic “Eggshells”. Both the new track and its companion music video were released Friday, September 30.

On the music side of this fourth installment of the ongoing audiovisual CAL adventure, pop music legend Jason Falkner once again handles all production, recording, arranging, and mixing duties in addition to his signature performance contributions to the original CAL song. As with all previous CAL recordings, “A Matter or Time” was tracked at Falkner’s Rhetoric Studio in Echo Park, with all instruments played by Jason Falkner and Anders Michael.

CAL’s vocalist and songwriter Anders Michael offers the following insights into collaborating with Jason Falkner on “A Matter of Time”:

“I’ve spoken before about how natural it was working with Jason on not only this track, but also the other songs I’ve released so far. Jason knew what I was going for immediately upon receiving my first demos, and we never looked back. Musically, ‘A Matter of Time’ ties so many CAL elements together — the sincere passion for classic pop songwriting with its melody and chords, but also an intersecting left-of-center sensibility that I think of as subtle psychedelia. As Jason so aptly described our m.o., it was indeed’ 70s soft rock, delivered by an alien.’ And to me, that’s ‘A Matter of Time’ in a nutshell.”

On the visual side, Ángel Estrada Fuentes (Tesoro Audiovisual) and his talented team reunited with CAL to create the video for “A Matter of Time”, hot on the heels of their award-winning collaborations for the “You Don’t Need a Reason” and “Eggshells” videos. English visual artist Russell Hardman is once again the mega-talent behind the CAL cover art.

Anders Michael offers the following insight into the video for “A Matter of Time”:

“I originally thought I would only be working with Ángel [Estrada Fuentes] and the Teroso Audiovisual team for one video — “You Don’t Need a Reason”. I was so delighted with how that video turned out, though, that I immediately started speaking with Ángel about doing more work together. “Eggshells” was everything I hoped for and more, so by the time we were making that video happen, we were already both eyeing additional future collaborations. It’s so fun and inspiring working with the entire Tesoro team, which is made up of some of the most talented and hardworking people I’ve ever worked with.

Since day one, Angel has intuited the CAL concept, and really took that connection to the next level with “A Matter of Time”. As fanciful and fun as this video is, it taps into some of the most personal and profound experiences I’ve had in my life. I’ve always maintained that art should -and does - speak for itself, and the biographies attached to those who make that art neither make nor break those creations. That said, it was pretty magical and mysterious to see how Ángel and his team combined their vision with mine so seamlessly, even though much of it was never overtly discussed. The resulting video is something of which I will always be exceptionally proud.”

Artwork “Cosmic Symphony” by Russell Hardman was done exclusively as the cover art “A Matter of Time”, becoming the fourth consecutive CAL/Hardman collaboration.

On Russell Hardman’s artwork, Anders Michael shares the following insights:

“Working with Russell has bean a dream for me. And to be clear, when I say ‘working with,’ I don’t mean to suggest I gave any direction or contributed in any way to the the vision for the remarkable work he’s done not only for ‘A Matter of Time’ but also for ‘All Along’, ‘You Don’t Need a Reason’, and ‘Eggshells’. Every time, I’ve simply shared the music with him, and we are immediately communicating on the same frequency in a way that I can —without hyberbole— best describe as telepathic.

Russell is one of my favorite visual artists out there, and he absolutely got what I was going for with these songs from the start. His astonishing art is a perfect complement to the CAL songs in every way. I periodically find myself mediately starting at them, just so happy with how they turned out.'“
