Tim Burgess Shares New Music Video "Here Comes the Weekend", Directed by Kevin Godley

Tim Burgess has shared his new single and music video “Here Comes the Weekend” from his upcoming and eagerly-anticipated album. That alone is cause for excitement here at WMF HQ, but making the release even more special is that the video’s director is the illustrious Kevin Godley, who — in addition to his storied music career with 10cc and Godley & Creme — is one of the most ground-breaking and influential music video creators in the history of the medium. These two music luminaries have collaborated before on two Charlatans music videos (recommended gems “Forever” in 1998 and and “A Man Needs to be Told” in 2001), so the creative reunion is as fitting as it is welcome.

Kevin Godley graciously shared the following detailed background to the “Here Comes The Weekend” music video with WMF:

"I directed two videos for The Charlatans back in 2001 but Tim and I reconnected recently when he invited me to do a couple of 10cc album listening parties. Anyway, we exchanged music. I sent him my solo album and Tim sent me his. My first listen to his sounded like pop chaos from space. Dense and psychedelic, great chorusses, swirling in and out of exotic flavours. Sonically very trippy but lyrically very down to earth then suddenly everything turning upside down and inside out. I love the unexpected and I certainly didn’t expect any of this! Second listen had things coming more into focus and some songs refusing to exit my brain…one being ‘Here Comes the Weekend’.

I recall being on a call with Tim chatting about the tracks and he simply asked if I’d be into making a video for it. Of course I said yes. I didn’t have an idea, a budget or a time line, but I knew I wanted to do it. A couple of concepts came and went until I fixated on the notion of physical separation versus virtual connection, to be shot as a threesome, with Rose [Keeler-Schäffeler] and Dan [O’Sullivan], guitar and drums, as digital projections, and Tim as a constant physical presence. That was the starting point anyway, but once we got to grips with the tools at my disposal on shoot day, we mixed it up and improvised a few more set pieces. It was what I call ‘an ammo gathering exercise’. In other words, no story boards, just a basic shot list, remaining open to how the artist likes to work, what might transpire in the moment, the potential of the projection technology, and shooting as much as possible in the time allotted, my ultimate job being to make sense of this particular chunk of visual chaos in the edit."

Tim is a consummate and instinctive performer, as are Rose and Dan, so I ended up with lots of great footage to play with. Unusually, I cut and graded the film myself, as I had a dynamic in my head that would’ve taken too long to explain to an editor, so I jumped into Final Cut Pro and stayed put until it sort of structured itself. Tim gave the rough cut a green light quickly so all I really had to do was tidy it up. The whole experience was, as I knew it would be, a total blast, and I hope that comes across in the finished film".

Tim Burgess also shared the following exclusive insights with WMF about the “Here Comes the Weekend” video collaboration with Kevin Godley:

“I was mesmerized by the music videos of Godley and Creme and I’ve been lucky enough to work with Kevin before, so it was an absolute pleasure to get together again with the maestro.”

Regarding the song itself, Tim described if for us as “a modern day romance helped and hindered by technology.”
