Tim Burgess Shares New Music Video "Typical Music", Directed by Kevin Godley

Tim Burgess has shared his new single and music video “Typical Music”, directed by all-around music and music video legend Kevin Godley. “Typical Music” follows hot on the heels of the pair’s “Here Comes the Weekend” video earlier this year, and both tracks will be on Tim’s upcoming and eagerly-anticipated album [via Bella Union]. “Typical Music” became a fast favorite of ours here at WMF HQ when we were lucky enough to have an early listen to Tim’s upcoming album a while back, so it’s fitting that the music should have such a remarkable music video. ”Typical Music” —both as a single and a video— already constitute a 2022 artistic highlight in our corner of the creative cosmos, and we feel certain many will feel the same about these works around the globe.

Kevin Godley graciously shared these new, exclusive, and fascinating details about the “Typical Music” video collaboration:

The title “Typical Music” suggested a film that was the polar opposite.

And how do you capture the spirit of a track like “Typical Music” with a music video? Not easy, as the medium itself can come over as an artificial afterthought and the track sounds like a Bullet Train about to come off the rails. I guess I could’ve storyboarded the film in excruciating detail and shot a mini movie but that is so not me. I wanted to put it together like recording music. As in aiming for something you hear / see in your head, but ending up somewhere else, and, if you’re lucky, somewhere better. Somewhere liberating. And that’s how I work with Tim. I have an idea, a shooting template that we agree has possibilities. Then I assemble some interesting tools, choose a fearless DOP, (Ross Stewart), the best producer (Ned O’Hanlon) rent an interesting space and trust Tim’s outrageous ability to deliver something unique, and he always does. Then I shoot everything. In this case Tim. Lots of Tim. Nothing but Tim. Good takes, bad ones, fuck ups, moments of accidental genius, total stupidity, failure and yes, lightning in a bottle magic. Lots of that. And as the day accelerates, the clock ticks and Tim gives me his best take on the point of physical collapse, then and only then do I know I’ve captured a Bullet Train about to come off the rails.

We shot at D - Light Studios, on the North side of Dublin, in a white room, 6 metres square with a single barred window.

We used 3 extremely wide angle lens cameras. A GoPro 360 degree camera, A WiFi Endoscope inspection camera and a Sony A7sll probe.

All gave excellent results but the wildest shots came from the GoPro 360, operated, hand - held, by Tim himself turning him into all manner of alien, unnatural Tims and initiating postures and moves that buckle the mind.  KG

Tim Burgess shared the following exclusive info about the “Typical Music” video and track with WMF:

“I was honoured once again to work with the absolute don of music videos, Kevin Godley, not only one of the best directors of all time - he also happened to be in 10cc too. So any coffee break was me trying to steer the conversation round to talking about their amazing music. Oh yeah, we’re talking about Typical Music aren’t we? One of my favourites from my new album

Somebody called it ‘a high octane Mariachi adventure,’ and I think that really captures the spirit of it. Another friend said it’s a surf punk sci fi soundtrack to a film featuring herds of galloping horses, and if those descriptions don’t get you wanting to listen, you’d better check that you still have a pulse.”
