Midnight Prisms Shares New Astrology Songs Album

Midnight Prims is a name familiar to many here in our corner of the musical universe, both premiering a video here at WMF in the past and also appearing on our year-end Top Tracks list in 2020. Over the past year, we’ve enjoyed seeing and hearing zodiac-themed music and videos from Midnight Prisms on Instagram, and were understandably excited to learn that the collection is finally available as an album on 2-22-22, aptly titled Astrology Songs.

Alicia Beck of Midnight Prisms generously pulled back the cosmic curtain just enough to directly share new and exclusive insights into Astrology Songs with WMF.

On what inspired the songs in the series:

”It’s kind of a long story but the Astrology Songs series morphed out of a previous project with a similar concept. In February of 2020 I created a custom love song/video series for Valentine’s Day. Each song was around 1 minute long to fit into the cut off for Instagram videos. At the time IGTV was either still relatively new or maybe non-existent, I can’t remember… (RIP IGTV). Either way, I decided that writing shorter songs was a fun and challenging format to try out (plus I desperately needed content). The pandemic hit about a month after the love song series premiered, prompting the Astrology Songs project, which thankfully kept me busy and creative during those dark days.”

On her relationship to astrology as a theme:

”My mom is the reason why I know anything about astrology. When I was a kid I remember browsing her collection of astrology books from the 70s and 80s, and hearing her refer to someone’s zodiac sign whenever someone was being a typical, “fill in the blank.” She would also remind my younger sister and I how we were so different as babies. I was always a distracted, lively Gemini, whereas my sister was a focused, chill Capricorn.

As I grew older I became more and more interested in learning about astrology and would memorize the signs of my friends to their surprise. It’s kinda crazy how much it’s blown up in recent years. Now everybody talks about each other’s sun, moon and rising signs like it’s the weather… but maybe it's just 'cause I live in LA? haha”

On the writing process for each of the songs:

”My writing process is kinda random. Usually I start with the music and build something from there, but sometimes the lyrics come first. The lyrics for ‘Gemini’ came to me in the shower of all places. That one was a breeze to write and one of my favorites to this day. ‘Libra’ was probably the most challenging by far. Try writing a song during Mercury and Mars retrograde. It was not fun, and I struggled with everything I recorded during that time."

On any songs from the album that may have particular or greater significance:

”Each song is special because they mark a different chapter of the pandemic, and my own spiritual and emotional journey during that year. The effect of embodying each sign during its season throughout the writing process was surprisingly cathartic. Every song had an individual offering to learn from, which feels like one of the most significant outcomes of this project.”
